BLOOM x Adelaide Design Week, 2026

BLOOM showcased 15 South Australian creatives in a multidisciplinary exhibition, examining the individual and collective experience of the algal bloom that has affected the SA coastlines. The exhibition was utilised as a platform for critical dialogue surrounding the ongoing ecological issue, explored through experimental visual art and design.

Artist statement

What if the consequences of our choices were already visible? Would we recognise them?

What if, instead of seeing nature as separate from humanity, we saw it as a never-ending feedback loop? Would we make better choices?

What if the water we depend upon could no longer sustain the life within it? Would we pay attention?

What if the bloom is not just an environmental event, but a reflection of the choices we’ve made? Would we recognize ourselves in it?

Perhaps the question is not what do we stand to lose by changing our actions, but what do we stand to lose if we don’t?

Anthropocene isn’t just about the damaging feedback loop between humanity and nature, it's the uncomfortable idea that the environmental damage is a reflection of ourselves and our choices. Can we fix it, or is it too late?
